Why We Love Reptiles as Pets: Celebrating World Reptile Day
Not every pet has four legs, a wagging tail or a habit of following you into the kitchen. Some prefer a warm basking spot, a quiet hideaway and a little bit of time to themselves!
To celebrate World Reptile Day, we're shining a spotlight on the wonderful world of reptile pets and why these fascinating animals have so much to offer.
From curious blue-tongue lizards and jolly terrapins, to beautiful bearded dragons and gentle pythons, reptiles can make rewarding companions for the right household. They have unique personalities, fascinating behaviours and care requirements that make getting to know them a learning experience in itself.
Here are a few reasons why we love reptiles as pets!
🦎 They're full of personality
Reptiles might not express affection in the same way as dogs and cats, but that doesn't mean they aren't fascinating to interact with.
Both bearded dragons and terrapins can become familiar with their owners and learn to recognise feeding routines. Blue-tongue lizards are often curious about their surroundings, while many snakes are wonderfully interesting to observe as they explore their environment.
Learning to recognise your reptile's normal behaviours is one of the most rewarding parts of keeping them. Over time, you may notice their favourite hiding spots, feeding preferences and little quirks.
The key is understanding them on their own terms. Reptiles generally don't enjoy the same level of handling as many traditional pets, so respecting their boundaries is an important part of building trust. That being said - some can be very outgoing and even love a cuddle! So get to know your reptile slowly, and they may enjoy some closeness.
🌿 They introduce us to a whole new world
One of the best things about keeping reptiles is how much there is to learn about them.
Reptiles have evolved a remarkable range of adaptations to survive in different environments. From the way they regulate their body temperature to their specialised diets and shedding cycles, they offer a fascinating glimpse into the natural world.
For children and adults alike, caring for a reptile can encourage curiosity about wildlife, conservation and animal behaviour.
They're also a lovely reminder that animals don't all experience the world in the same way. Understanding what makes each species unique helps us become more thoughtful and responsible animal carers.
☀️ They teach us the importance of getting the environment right
One of the most interesting things about reptiles is that their health is closely linked to their environment.
Unlike mammals, reptiles rely on external heat sources to regulate their body temperature. This means their enclosure needs to provide the right temperatures, allowing them to move between warmer and cooler areas as needed.
Depending on the species, they may also need specialised lighting, including ultraviolet B (UVB), appropriate humidity, hiding places and opportunities to display natural behaviours.
Getting these details right is essential for their wellbeing. Incorrect temperatures, inadequate lighting or an unsuitable diet can contribute to serious health problems over time.
A happy, healthy reptile starts with the right setup! Researching the specific needs of your species before bringing one home is one of the best things you can do as a reptile owner.
🥬 Every species has its own needs
There's no one-size-fits-all approach to reptile care.
Lizards and turtles have different dietary requirements from snakes, and even species with similar appearances can have very different needs.
Depending on the species, a balanced diet might include appropriately selected insects, vegetables or whole prey. Supplementation may also be necessary to ensure your reptile receives the nutrients it needs.
It's important to remember that reptiles can be very good at hiding signs of illness. Changes in appetite, activity, body condition, shedding or bowel movements can sometimes be early indicators that something isn't quite right.
Knowing what's normal for your individual pet makes it easier to spot changes and seek veterinary advice early.
💚 They're fascinating to observe
Reptiles have some incredible behaviours that make them rewarding pets to watch. From a bearded dragon investigating its surroundings or a terrapin taking a dip, to a snake exploring a new hide or a blue-tongue lizard gobbling down blueberries, there's always something interesting happening if you take the time to look.
Unlike pets that need regular walks or constant interaction, many reptiles are content to spend time exploring their enclosure, basking or resting in a favourite hide. This makes them a great opportunity to appreciate animal behaviour at a different pace.
Sometimes, the joy of keeping a reptile is simply watching them be themselves.
🏡 Thinking about getting a reptile?
Reptiles can make wonderful pets, but they're a commitment that deserves careful consideration.
Before welcoming one into your home, make sure you:
Research your species. Understand its adult size, lifespan, diet, temperament and environmental requirements - and any licensing requirements for your state or territory (this is a big one)
Set up the enclosure first. Make sure temperatures, lighting and humidity are appropriate before your pet arrives.
Choose a responsible source. In NSW, check the relevant native animal licensing requirements before acquiring a native reptile. Never take reptiles from the wild.
Find the right veterinary care. Look for a veterinarian with experience treating reptiles. Our Dr Evan not only has decades of reptile experience, but is a lifelong reptile lover - Evan is always excited to see your scaly friends!
Practise good hygiene. Reptiles can carry Salmonella even when they appear healthy. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling your reptile or cleaning its enclosure, and keep reptile equipment away from food preparation areas.
Taking the time to get these things right helps set both you and your reptile up for a happy, healthy life together.
🦎 Happy World Reptile Day!
Today is a great opportunity to appreciate these remarkable animals and the important role they play in our ecosystems.
Whether you're already sharing your home with a scaly companion or simply enjoy spotting lizards in the garden, there's plenty to love about reptiles.
And remember, the best way to show our reptile friends some love is to understand their needs, respect their natural behaviours and give them the care they deserve.
