Ageing Gracefully: Our Top Tips to Support Your Senior Pet

At Lennox Head Vet Clinic, we believe pets only get better with age. Just like us, our furry friends slow down a little as the years go by - but with the right care, senior pets can stay comfortable, happy, and full of life. Whether you’ve got a golden oldie dog or a wise whiskered cat, here are our top tips for helping them age gracefully.

Nutrition Matters More Than Ever

A balanced diet tailored to your pet’s age and health needs can support joint health, weight management, and energy levels. Senior-specific diets are specially formulated to give your pet the right nutrients without the extras they don’t need.

Supplements like Antinol and 4cyte can be life-changing for joint health, and are easy, over-the-counter additions to your pet’s senior care plan.

📊 Studies show that over 50% of older pets are overweight, which can increase the risk of diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease.

Keep Them Moving

Exercise is still important, even if it looks a little different than in their younger days. Gentle walks, light play, or even puzzle feeders can keep their body and mind active without overdoing it.

While the beach is a place for play and sparking joy, try and reduce running, jumping and ball-chasing as your pet ages. We often see torn ACLs, sore backs, early arthritis and sore dogs in general from the above activities - especially when they’re over the hill! Sometimes the zoomies are unavoidable, but gentle play will always be safer on their ageing bodies.

Comfort Is Key

As pets age, they may need a few home adjustments. Soft but supportive bedding (like orthopaedic beds), ramps for easier access, and a warm spot out of the breeze can make everyday life more comfortable.

They may feel the cold more easily, and you’ll be surprised the difference a blanket to snuggle into can make.

For cats, they may groom themselves less due to reduced mobility - keep an eye on their coat and coat health. Brushing may be necessary for long-haired cats especially, who may also require sedate and grooms to keep on top of knots.

Watch for Subtle Changes

Changes in appetite, behaviour, mobility, or toileting habits can be early warning signs of health concerns. If you notice something new, it’s always worth checking in with us.

Keep Up with Regular Vet Visits

Older pets benefit from more frequent check-ups. Health issues can sneak up quickly in senior years, and catching them early makes all the difference. Think of it as a wellness tune-up to keep tails wagging and purrs going strong.

📊 Did you know? Around 1 in 3 pets over the age of 7 have some form of arthritis or joint disease, that can be managed with early care.

A Little Extra Love

Above all, senior pets thrive on routine, reassurance, and affection. Your love and attention make their golden years the best years.

At Lennox Head Vet Clinic, we’re here to help your pet age with grace and comfort. Book a senior pet check-up today and let’s make sure your best friend enjoys every moment of their golden years.
